The recent discovery of a little anthology of poems from the Sicilian School, transcribed in Bergamo on three reused leaves of parchment around the 1250/60s, raises once again the issue of the early diffusion of these poems in northern Italy. On the recto side, the three sheets contain a list of fines issued by the authorities of the commune of Bergamo against some noble citizens participating in a tournament; on the verso side, the same hand wrote, in a cursive script, the fragments of four poems belonging to the Sicilian School: Oi lasso! non pensai by Ruggerone da Palermo; Contra lo meo volere by Paganino da Serzana; Donna, eo languisco e no so qua·speranza by Giacomo da Lentini; Amore m’àve priso by Percivalle Doria. The texts, unique documents for their antiquity and historical, textual and linguistic relevance, are published in a diplomatic and interpretative edition.

The article presents an edition of a hitherto unknown fragment of Philippe de Novare’s Des quatre temps d’aage d’ome, recently uncovered in the Fondo Miniature e cimeli of the Archivio di Stato in Milan. As well as publishing the text, the essay affords the protohistory of this finding, both studying its relationships with the overall tradition of the treatise, and analyses the linguistic stratification of the text, in the light of Old French varieties used in Italy and the Middle East.

The article proposes an interpretative edition of a hitherto unknown manuscript copy of a fragment of Dante’s Paradiso; the author aims to demonstrate that the fragment is derived from a manuscript from the Cento family, very close to ms. Tz (Milano, Biblioteca dell’Archivio Storico Civico e Trivulziana, 1077).

Due “nuovi” manoscritti antichi dell’Estoire de la guerre sainte (TCD 11325 e BAV Reg. Lat. 1659)
The essay examines two of the three known manuscripts of L’Estoire de la guerre sainte, a poem on the crusade of Richard the Lionheart. Both of them are interesting because of their supposed antiquity, as they are exceptionally close to the time of composition of the text. Both the fragmentary, unpublished manuscript kept at Trinity College, Dublin and the only complete manuscript preserved in the Vatican Library may, in fact, date back to the first half of the thirteenth century, no more than fifty years after the composition of L’Estoire. Codicological, palaeographical and cultural elements support this new hypothesis.

The importance of MS Nottingham, UL, WLC/LM/6 in Old French literary tradition has been underlined by a number of studies. Nevertheless, some questions about the production and the interpretation of this recueil have not received a satisfactory answer. This contribution focuses on a new investigation of the scribes’ hands, the mise en page and the structure of the codex. The authors also aim to provide new elements which could help dating the volume and understanding the context in which it was produced.

This paper aims to investigate the relationship between ms 21, currently of the Newberry Library in Chicago, and the ms Arsenal 3347 preserved in Paris. A comparative study, which focuses on the material aspects of the manuscripts, allows to determine the approximate date, origin and editorial project that lie behind the two manuscripts.

Dinamiche lessico-editoriali in Bernart de Ventadorn: cor e cors
The paper wants to offer first of all a “reasoned map” of lemmatas cors and cor in Bernart de Ventadorn; through the analysis of their semantic contexts it is possible to clear some interpretative doubts. As well as the intentional ambiguity of the word cors (meaning both heart and body), we can observe that the lexical area of ‘body’ is richer than that of ‘heart’. The paper bases this conclusion on a statistical analysis of the lexicon. Furthermore this can be of help also in making editorial decisions. The understanding of the troubadour and of his courtly ideology seems to depend in some cases on decisions that are not justified by conclusive evidence.

Castigationes al Libro de Apolonio
This article begins by reflecting on textual criticism and medieval texts and discusses the views of two among the great masters in the discipline, Alberto Blecua and Francisco Rico, who defend opposing viewpoints. The study reviews traditional philological criteria (lectio difficilior, usus scribendi, etc.) and reassesses their validity applying them to a medieval poem, the Libro de Apolonio, which has survived in only one manuscript. Its Latin source, the Historia Apollonii Regis Tyri, has survived in two drafts, RA y RB. Also useful for establishing the critical text are the French versions (which postdate the Spanish poem), which in some cases translate the original and in others recreate it, as well as the English version that John Gower includes in book VIII of his Confessio amantis.

The article deals with the rewriting by Iacopo Mazza, and observant Franciscan of Boccaccio’s famous novella about Griselda. Through the mediation of the Augustinian Iacopo Filippo Foresti, Mazza uses the story of the patient girl to show the potential damage of a different social status between a husband and wife. The rewriting amounts therefore to a resemantisation of the source text from a sociological point of view.

La censura religiosa nella trasmissione del testo della Celestina
The present work seeks to analyse the actions of religious censorship in the text of La Celestina – earlier than and independent of the Index Universalis of 1632. Printers and editors of Rojas’ work in the printing houses, in fact, were the first to submit his text to an ethical evaluation, generating variations and interpolations that were then transmitted to later editions. This phenomenon anticipates the censorship of the Inquisition and fits in the transmission of the text. The study of the text itself is therefore essential in order to identify the origins of this phenomenon and follow its developments.

Quale Pessoa? Ultime edizioni e nuove prospettive
Even though almost eighty years have passed since Fernando Pessoa’s death and more than seventy since the publication of the first posthumous volumes, his works still lack definitive or generally approved editions. This is due without doubt to the particular state of the Pessoa Archive – housed in the Biblioteca Nacional de Lisboa – which abounds in texts that are incomplete and difficult to read or reconstruct. But the situation also derives from constantly changing and at times contradictory publishing strategies which have given rise to the circulation of different versions of Pessoa’s works, often at cross purposes with regard to structure and basic criteria. The paper presents new developments in Pessoan studies over the past five years, both in the bio-bibliographical and publishing fields, and illustrates the most recent findings in textual and literary criticism relating to Pessoa. An examination of the criteria applied to the most recent critical editions is followed by a series of proposals for a new approach in dealing with the problems presented by Pessoa’s works.
