L’effacement et le dénigrement des femmes dans le Décaméron d’Antoine Vérard (1485)
Anne Robin

L’effacement et le dénigrement des femmes dans le Décaméron d’Antoine Vérard (1485)
The rst printed edition of the Decameron, which was translated by Laurent de Premierfait and realised by Antoine Vérard in 1485, is the result of a substantial alteration of Boccaccio’s text, which was carried out by the publishers partially on the basis of the manuscript tradition. This paper presents a survey of the changes carried out by the translator, with special regard to women as main addressees and characters (especially Ghismonda, I.4, and Madonna Filippa, VI.7). In the French translation, which was read until the middle of the XVIth c., the attitude towards women is quite different from Boccaccio’s, as it appears rather derogatory if not mysogynistic.
