Gherardo Ortalli

Gherardo Ortalli è professore emerito di Storia medievale presso l’Università di Venezia Ca’ Foscari. Della sua ampia e varia produzione si ricordano, fra gli altri, i volumi Lupi genti culture (Einaudi, 1997) e Barattieri. Il gioco d’azzardo fra economia ed etica. Secoli XIII-XV (il Mulino, 2012), nonché la direzione di «Ludica, annali di storia e civiltà del gioco» pubblicata da Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche-Viella.

Professor Emeritus of Mediaeval History at the University of Ca’ Foscari, Venice and a member of numerous academies and societies in Italy and elsewhere, Ortalli is especially interested in the mentality, culture and history of ludicity; he has been the editor of the journal Ludica. Annali di storia e civiltà del gioco since its first issue. In 2017 he was awarded the ‘Chabod’ Prize by the Accademia dei Lincei for the best Italian work of mediaeval, modern or contemporary history published in the previous five years. He is President Emeritus of the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti, Venice.
