Bernd Roeck

Born in 1953, Bernd Roeck was Director of the German Study Centre in Venice from 1986 to 1990. Thereafter he taught at the universities of Augsburg, Bonn and Zurich. From 1996 to 1999 he was elected Secretary General of the Italian-German Centre Villa Vigoni in Loveno di Menaggio on Lake Como. In 1999 he was appointed to the Chair of General and Swiss History of Modern Times at the University of Zurich. He is the author of numerous publications on early modern European history, including a history of the Renaissance, a biography of Leonardo da Vinci (third edition, Munich 2019) and a new interpretation of Piero della Francesca’s Flagellation (Piero della Francesca e l’assassino, Turin 2007).
