Francesco Valerio

With a PhD in Classical Philology from Ca’ Foscari University, Venice, Valerio’s main interests are ancient Greek and Byzantine poetry (especially the epigram), Greek Paleography and the History of Classical Scholarship. His publications include a critical edition and commentary of the elegiac and lyrical fragments of Ion of Chios (2013); several articles on Agathias Scholasticus and his epigrams (in journals Jahrbuch der Österreichischen Byzantinistik, 2011; Incontri di Filologia Classica, 2011-2012; Byzantion, 2013; and in La poesia greca tardoantica, edited by Enrico Magnelli and Daria Gigli, 2013); biographical surveys of two leading 19th-century classical scholars, John Pentland Mahaffy (in Hermae, edited by Mario Capasso, 2013) and Girolamo Vitelli (in Polymatheia. Scritti in onore di M. Capasso, 2017); edition and commentary of some Late- Antique and Byzantine epigrams (in journal Medioevo Greco, 2016). He has also revised and prepared for the press Roberto Campagner’s posthumous monograph about I giochi in Aristofane, to be published in the series “Ludica”.
