Christian Jaser

Following studies in history and Latin philology of the Middle Ages in Munich and Berlin, Christian Jaser received his PhD on Medieval Rituals of Excommunication in 2011, and in 2019 he completed his habilitation thesis on 15th- and early 16th-century urban sport cultures in Italy and Germany. In December 2020 he became Professor of Mediaeval History and Auxiliary Sciences of History at the University of Klagenfurt in Austria and in 2023 he was appointed Professor at the University of Kassel. He held several scholarships at the Historisches Kolleg in Munich, at the German Historical Institutes in Rome and Paris and at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Marseille. In 2020 he was awarded the Humboldt University Prize for excellent achievements in the field of Mediaeval history for his book on urban horse racing in 15th- and early 16th-century Italy and Germany (forthcoming). His main fields of study are the history of Renaissance sport cultures, the history of Mediaeval ecclesiastical sanctions and cultures of conflict in the Middle Ages.
