Bernard Dov Cooperman holds the Louis L. Kaplan Chair of Jewish History at the University of Maryland, College Park. His essay “Inventing the Jewish People by Periodizing Jewish Time,” part of a larger study of 20th-century Jewish historiography, is scheduled to appear in Chronologics: Periodization in a Global Context, ed.
