Alessandra Vianello

Alessandra Vianello studied law and is an independent scholar who lived and worked in Somalia for most of her life. She has published widely about the history of Brava and its unique Bantu language (Chimiini or Chimbalazi), including “Women’s Legal Agency and Property in the Court Records of Late 19th-Century Brava” (with Lidwien Kapteijns, History in Africa, 2017). She co-edited Servants of the Sharia: The Civil Register of the Qadis’ Court of Brava, 1893-1900 (with Mohamed Kassim, 2006) and Stringing Coral Beads: The Religious Poetry of Brava c. 1890-1975 (with Kapteijns and Kassim, 2018).
