Jacob Schmidt-Madsen

A postdoctoral researcher in Indology in the Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, Jacob Schmidt-Madsen wrote his doctoral dissertation on the origin, history, meaning, and usage of gyan chaupar, or the game of knowledge, adopted in the West as the modern children’s game of snakes and ladders. His current research concerns the history of the grid diagram in South Asia, with special emphasis on its position as an interface between games and other cultural forms and practices.
