Lothar Höbelt

Lothar Höbelt was born in 1956 and studied history at Vienna University with Heinrich Lutz and Adam Wandruszka. He received his Ph.D. sub auspiciis praesidentis in 1982 with a study of the strategies behind British appeasement policy and finished his habilitation (“Kornblume und Kaiseradler”) in 1990. He worked as visiting professor at the University of Chicago in 1992; he was appointed associate professor of Modern History at the University of Vienna in 1997 (retired 2021). Apart from forays into Baroque warfare, he has mainly worked on nineteenth and twentieth century Austrian politics. His latest books include Stehen oder Fallen? Österreichische politik im ersten Weltkrieg (2015), Das Provisorium: Die Erste republik Österreich 1918-1938 (2018) and Die Zweite Republik Österreich und ihre Besonderheiten (2020).
