Gli studia humanitatis costituiscono per gli antichi il nutrimento del cittadino capace di conciliare otium e negotium, vivendo e operando in armonia con se stesso e con gli altri (cfr. Cicerone, Arch. 3, Mur. 61).
Secoli dopo gli umanisti designarono con la medesima espressione le discipline indispensabili al perfezionamento della natura umana nella sua interezza. La cultura non si limita infatti alla sola logica dell’intelletto; per questo il sapiens deve conoscere la grammatica, la retorica e la storia, la filosofia e la poesia.
Pur nella diversità di ambiti e metodologie, è questo ideale di unità che la collana Studia humanitatis intende perseguire pubblicando ricerche di filologi, storici ed esegeti della Pontificia Academia Latinitatis, uniti da un comune impegno per la verità, nel servizio alla cultura.

For the ancient people, the studia humanitatis facilitate the intellectual nourishment of the citizen capable of reconciling otium and negotium, living and working in harmony with oneself and others (cf. Cicero, Arch. 3, Mur. 61).
Centuries later, humanists have used the same expression (otium and negotium) to depict the essential disciplines for the enhancement of human nature in its entirety. Infact, culture is not limited to the mere exercise of the intellect; for this reason, the sapiens must have an holistic understanding of grammar, rhetoric and history, philosophy and poetry.
The series Studia humanitatis aspire to pursue towards an ideal unity, despite of the variety of scopes and methodologies. This is fulfilled through the research publications of philologists, historians and exegetes of the Pontificia Academia Latinitatis who hold a common commitment to the truth and who are at the service of the culture.
