Armi & amori nella tradizione del testo. Da Chrétien de Troyes al Roman de Guiron
Nicola Morato

Love, arms, and textual transmission. From Chrétien de Troyes to the Roman de Guiron

The author investigates the couple armes & amour (love and prowess) in Old French Arthurian romances. In them – rather surprisingly – it appears very sparsely, if at all. The study affords a detailed examination of the contexts in which the two terms feature, both as co-occurrences and separately, in Chrétien’s romances and the Roman de Guiron. It discusses the morphological and semantic forms and uses of the two terms, accounting for the various lexical equivalents that appear in the polygenetic varia lectio, and which seem to issue from the scribes’ cultural backgrounds.

Riso della donna e riso di Dio. Una traccia trobadorica per Paradiso XXVII
Susanna Barsotti

The lady’s and God’s smile: a trobadoric trace for Paradiso XXVII

The theme of the renovatio constitutes one of the most frequent openings in Provençal poetry. In Raimbaut d’Aurenga’s Ab nou cor et ab nou talen (BdT 389,1), ll. 31-35 the lady’s smile is related to the smile of God and the angels. The image, unique in the lyric tradition, brings immediately to mind Beatrice’s smile in Par. XXVII. The possibility that Dante may be quoting Raimbaut is supported by the argument that in the canto Dante retraces the stages of his love for Beatrice and the definitive abandonment of earthy love. Raimbaut’s poem could therefore narrate, in a nutshell, the journey from love as renovatio (Vita Nova) to the contemplation of the lady’s riso in Paradise.

«selonc ce que mestre Jehan de Mandeville chevalier racompte». Cavalieri alla scoperta del mondo
Martina Di Febo

«selonc ce que mestre Jehan de Mandeville chevalier racompte». Knights travelling the world

To justify his exploits Don Quixote claims that chivalric adventures narrated in the novels are truthful recollections of real deeds. Yet even before the adventures of the knight from La Mancha, late medieval aristocracy had set out to discover the world and its fantastic regions. This paper aims at reconstructing the travel imagery of the chivalry en queste and the development of the quest from a path to initiation to a learning experience.

Boiardo e la galassia cavalleresca
Eleonora Stoppino

Boiardo and the chivalric galaxy

Studies on intertextuality in the Italian chivalric production of the fifteenth and sixteenth century must face the problem of the so called «chivalric omniscience» (Tissoni). Chivalric omniscience is the phenomenon by which public and author participate in a constant game of memory, based on a shared knowledge of the texts. This paper presents examples of Boiardo’s use of the chivalric matter at different textual levels, with a concentration on the character of Bradamante, the warrior heroine who becomes the founder of the Este dynasty in the Inamoramento de Orlando.

Carducci e il “ritrovamento” del Canzoniere di Petrarca
Carlo Pulsoni

Carducci and the rediscovery of Petrarch’s original manuscript

The article reconstructs the controversies following the rediscovery in 1886 of the original manuscript of Petrarch’s Canzoniere (ms. Vatican Latin 3195), in the Vatican Library. Among the protagonists of the story there are scholars of various nationalities: Pakscher, de Nolhac, Salvo Cozzo. Among them Carducci, both as scholar and as a proto-editor of Petrarch in 1876.
