I giocosi marginalia del manoscritto Oxford, Bodleian Library, ms. Bodl. 264
Margherita Lecco

I giocosi marginalia del manoscritto Oxford, Bodleian Library, ms. Bodl. 264

The playful marginalia in a manuscript in the Bodleian Library in Oxford, ms. Bodl. 264

The 14th century manuscript catalogued as Oxford, Bodleian Library, ms. Bodl. 264 is a transcription of a romance which the 12th century writer Alexandre de Paris dedicated to Alexander the Great. Other texts on the same subject make up a substantial compilation of writings about Alexander. Each of them, with the later addition of the Devisement du Monde – known in Italian as Il Milione, by Marco Polo – is accompanied by a number of fine miniatures which, beside the principal image of Alexander, comprise a series of marginalia (figures in the margins of the text, in the present case at the bottom of the page), which record scenes, trades and games of everyday life in the Middle Ages. The article examines the marginalia dedicated to contemporary games and their practice, both those that required mental skills and those which depended on physical agility, to dances and to dressing up for Carnival.

Die Darstellung des Spiels in den Marginalia der Oxford-Handschrift, Bodleian Library, ms. Bodl. 264

Die aus dem 14. Jahrhundert datierende Handschrift mit der Bezeichnung Oxford, Bodleian Library, ms. Bodl.

Humanism as a form of entertainment: Hungarian-Slavonian examples

The popularity of humanism depended heavily on its likability, and its adherents often used it as a means of outsmarting and entertaining each other with cunningly worded Latin epistles and poems. The first Croatian-Hungarian humanists, like Ianus Pannonius, got ahead in their society thanks to their sharp tongues and often searing humour, which goes to show that even the most sublime works of literary art were often written mainly to put smiles on people’s faces.

The theatrical impact of St Francis Xavier’s canonization: Pietro Della Valle’s account of the 1624 Jesuit festivities in Goa

The theatrical impact of St Francis Xavier’s canonization: Pietro Della Valle’s account of the 1624 Jesuit festivities in Goa

In Rome, on 12th March 1622, Pope Gregory XV canonized an Italian churchman and four Spaniards. The cultural impact of this resounding public endorsement of Europe’s greatest imperial power by its most influential religious leader swiftly reverberated around every known continent in the Old and New World, inspiring religious, civic and private drama, festival and ceremony at every level. The numerous eye-witness accounts documenting its status as a watershed event in global performance history include the travel journal of the Italian aristocrat and musicologist Pietro Della Valle (1586-1652), who set sail from Venice in 1614, returning to Rome only in 1626. The fifty-four letters in which he describes his adventures in Asia, posthumously edited and published as his Viaggi, reflect an exceptionally informed and enquiring engagement with music, festival and the stage. Della Valle actively participated in Carnival festivities of 1624 during which the Jesuits of Goa celebrated the canonization of their missionary to India, St Francis Xavier. His descriptions represent our most valuable record of one of the most elaborate, substantial and culturally significant of the numerous festivals inspired by the 1622 multiple canonization.

The Mausoleum of Augustus, also known as the Anfiteatro Corea: a new space for entertainment spectacles in Rome. Bull-baiting and other amusements in the late Eighteenth and early Nineteenth Century

The article pieces together the various games that took place in the Mausoleum of Augustus, which was transformed into an amphitheatre in 1780: bull-baiting, nocturnal festivities with the launch of a hot-air balloon, firework displays and equestrian performances given by the Guillaume company. This new space for ludic activities became a popular place for Romans to meet, socialize and be entertained as a relief from the stresses of everyday life and Papal oppression. Bull-baiting, a widely enjoyed spectacle whose Ancient Greek roots predated its popularity with the Romans, was abolished in 1829, whereas the hot-air balloon, the fireworks and the equestrian displays were all considered “modern” entertainments.

Sixteenth Century courts and salons: giochi di veglia

Sixteenth Century courts and salons: giochi di veglia

The 16th century saw the rapid spread of conversation games in seigneurial courts and aristocratic salons. Groups of men and women would meet to put their language skills to the test by speaking to set, often esoteric, subjects, with prizes and forfeits. This highly popular ludic practice was accompanied by a number of widely read publications, which in turn consolidated the game’s fortune. The first and archetype of the genre was Il Cortegiano by Baldassar Castiglione. Then came a series of works by Innocenzio Ringhieri and the brothers Bargagli, these latter reinforcing the connection between Veglie and Siena. The article surveys the history of giochi di veglia, the ways the games were played and the social milieus (especially the Academies) where they featured most often. The article brings out the requirements of chivalrous courtesy, the literary associations, their artificiality, their structure, at once simple and complex, and the unique opportunities they offered for roles to be played by women.

Gioco e finanza: scommesse e lotterie
Manfred Zollinger

Gioco e finanza: scommesse e lotterie

Gambling and finance: betting and lotteries

During the 1500s, gambling came to be perceived in a new way. In many parts of Europe, in response to the proliferation and spread of betting and lotteries, such activities were regulated (if not summarily banned); bringing them under public control made them an instrument of finance and revenue for private bodies, governments and sovereigns. The shared logic was the growing and urgent need for money. While betting was once again prohibited, even where it was legal (in Rome and Florence), a new form emerged in Genoa from 1576. The placing of bets on numbers drawn by the Genoese authorities became a new lottery, the so-called lotto di Genova. With some variations, the game spread first all over Italy and then to almost every country in Europe. The new lottery was also responsible for the gradual disappearance of other traditional forms of betting.

Pietro Aretino’s “speaking” cards

The article examines the Dialogo del giuoco of 1543, in which Pietro Aretino parodied treatises dealing with ludic technique and the dialogue form. The study illustrates the stratified construction of the work, its allusive vocabulary and the adoption of an unusual point of view that places the players at the centre of the dialogue, not the game; all features that combine to create an image of the world and society which is diametrically opposed to the rigid and intransigent world-view promoted around the same time by the leading figures of the Counter-Reformation. As in 1534 with the sexual subject-matter of Le sei giornate, Aretino turned in 1543 to another officially “immoral” subject, cards and gaming, in order to make a “moral” point. The work’s rehabilitation of the disvalori associated with card games is only apparently paradoxical; seen through the eyes of the cards they end up transformed into a new and no more than seemingly provocative vision of things.

The invention of educational card games in the Renaissance, or: how to learn Roman law and logic with playing cards by Thomas Murner

The invention of educational card games in the Renaissance, or: how to learn Roman law and logic with playing cards by Thomas Murner

Today the use of games, particularly, playing cards, is generally accepted as a valuable teaching aid. Not so five hundred years ago, when the use of playing cards for purposes other than games was something that attracted attention and gave rise to heated controversy. The invention of educational playing cards is usually ascribed to Thomas Murner (1475-1537), a controversial German Franciscan monk with a doctorate in theology and in canon and civil law. As a university teacher he invented educational playing cards as a teaching aid for students of Justinian’s Institutiones, one part of the Corpus Iuris Civilis, around 1502, which were published as a book in 1518 (Chartiludium Institute). He also devised a card game for the study of logic (Chartiludium logicae – 1507 – and Logica memorativa – 1508). Soon after Murner’s invention came another didactic card book, the Grammatica figurata (1509) by Matthias Ringmann. It was not before 1644 that educational cards experienced a renaissance.

Sport and scientific thinking in the Sixteenth Century: ruling out playfulness
John McClelland

Sport and scientific thinking in the Sixteenth Century: ruling out playfulness

Johan Huizinga saw the systematization characteristic of 20th-century sport as inimical to the playful creativity that was a fundamental human impulse. True playing makes up its patterns as it goes along and only slowly transforms these patterns into rules. This essay examines the proposition that that process can be observed in the 16th century when Antonio Scaino, a cliente of the ducal Este family of Ferrara, acting as referee of a tennis match, made a ruling against his patron. Having to justify his ruling, Scaino could find no rule book that authorized it. This scoring disagreement had wide-reaching implications because ultimately it became a confrontation between two game paradigms: the well-established noble paradigm in which the players defined the game by disregarding rules; and the new bourgeois paradigm based on the principles of science, whereby the game made sense only if conforming to rules inspired by mathematical models. Lacking any ancient authority that would underpin his decision, Scaino created his own authority by a rational analysis of the logic and geometry of tennis. However, the rigid structure he imposed on the giuoco della palla ultimately alienated the nobles who could afford to play it and that game died out.

“Games” in the gardens of the Gonzagas

Bearing in mind that the Renaissance garden is, by its very nature, destined for games, understood in a wide range of expressions, this paper sets out to analyse three famous gardens belonging to the Gonzagas, the Lords of Mantua. No trace now remains of the actual gardens but documentary and iconographic sources make it possible to reconstruct their nature and their history. The first example is that of Marmirolo, which was famous not only for the Gonzaga castle but also for its gardens, which Leandro Alberti (1550) reported as containing wonderful fountains, fruit trees clipped by topiary artists and vines, all features that are found in drawings by Giulio Romano and contemporary tapestries. An interesting aspect concerns Bernardino Facciotto’s plans (circa 1585) for a highly unusual building that included rooms and spaces expressly reserved for various kinds of game (ball-games, games with racquets, billiard tables). The second case concerns the garden adjoining the castle at Goito, a place that was much loved by Guglielmo Gonzaga; the great fountain there (1584) contained an islet that would sink under the weight of the unsuspecting visitors. The last is the garden of the Favorita, an ambitious suburban residence of the Gonzagas which was built in the first years of the 17th century. The plans provided for the installation of a number of automaton figures (cats, monkeys, hunters spraying water, song birds, a hydraulic organ, pipers, and so on).

Play or art? A Sixteenth Century dialogue

The experience of street artists, jugglers, entertainment performers, tightrope walkers and acrobats was widely documented in the 16th century. Published in Paris in 1599, the article Trois dialogues de l’exercice de sauter et voltiger en l’air provides a detailed description of one of these artistic forms, which today might be called artistic gymnastics. The author of the text, who describes himself as a high level tumbler par excellence, was also an instructor for the King of France. What merits attention is that there is a literary work published on this movement form, and unlike other practices involving movement such as fencing, hunting or dancing, artistic gymnastics was not already an established part of court life; on the contrary, it came from a tradition that was anything but noble. One of the questions to be explored is therefore whether this practice, in its historical context, should be considered as art or play.

Spiel oder Kunst? Ein Dialog aus dem 16. Jahrhundert

Dance in the Sixteenth Century
Alessandro Arcangeli

Dance the Sixteenth Century

For dance practices in Italy and the rest of Europe, the 16th century was a time of change. Perhaps more appropriate would be to adopt the Italian term used in treatises of the time – mutanze – to refer to the variations of what in many ways was the most popular and representative of dances, the gagliarda. But the same word could be used as a metaphor for the far-reaching transformations that were affecting key dichotomies such as pastime/profession, performance/audience, high/low in the social hierarchy, centre/periphery in the dynamics of cultural production and exchange. In the interpretation proposed by some of the more convincing and stimulating historical studies, the situations at the beginning and end of the century appear to have been quite different from each other and mutually recognisable. The paper sets out to reconstruct these scenarios and to suggest a few intermediate “photograms” to illustrate how dance might have changed through the century.

Banquets, food and dance. Youth Companies at the table in Renaissance Venice

The article focuses on the banquets organized by the companies of adolescent scions of wealthy families of the Venetian aristocracy, the Compagnie della Calza. Between the mid-1400s and the mid-1500s, the Companies organized luxurious banquets both in the public sphere – especially those held to honour high-ranking foreign visitors to Venice – and in private circles, often at night. Being a rich and complex event, the Companies’ “table ritual” can open windows onto many phenomena typical of Venetian patrician culture during the Renaissance – from the ceremonial conventions governing the welcome of distinguished foreign visitors to the development of hierarchical ranking and social and political networking within the Venetian patriciate; from the male chauvinist mentality of the noble classes to the relationship between the young and the power-wielding gerontocracy and to the introduction of “other” cultural forms into Venice.

Banchetti, cibo e danza.
