Alberto Conte

In Catalonian, there are different manuscripts, some are still complete and others in fragments, from a Tuscan bestiary. It is a hard task to find out the connection between the Catalonian testimonies and its possible original manuscript due to the big amount of manuscripts preserved in both languages and its peculiarities. However, we think that the original manuscript that was used for the Catalonian translation belongs in a Tuscan’s manuscripts family that we have called “Paris-Rome”. This paperwork is a travel across the many differences we find in the Catalonian translation, and also the common mistakes. Although we can find a quite correct use of the Tuscan language, –and knowing that Tuscan is very similar to Catalonian language–, some difficulties come up while translating, some solved in a curious way.

The paper presents the first results of a project chaired by Maria Luisa Meneghetti, aiming at studying manuscript Berlin, Staatsbibiliothek, Hamilton 390 (olim Saibante) from the codicological, paleographic, linguistic, textual, historical and artistic points of view. A first-hand analysis of the manuscript provided data for a new complete and updated codicological description, and enabled some important discoveries, like the subscription of an ancient owner, Marco, written in October 1350 in Famagusta (f. 1r). Against this backdrop, the paper formulates hypotheses on the ancient stages of the history of the codex. The study also proposes a new description and interpretation of the two first illuminations (ff. 1r-2v, portraying the Rose-Window and the Fortune’s Wheel).

The aim of this paper is to study the first Italian odes based on Horatce’s model reconsidering their role within the orthodox petrarchism delineated by Pietro Bembo. To this purpose, BernardoTasso’s 55 odes (1534-1560) and 30 psalmos (1560) will be analyzed using the concept of imitación compuesta and stressing the evolution from prophane to religious poetry. The choice of BernardoTasso is justified not only by the fact that he is one of the first Italian petrarchists to imitate Horace, but also by the fact that the metric formula he invented, the lira, was used by Garcilaso de la Vega becoming, in Spain, the model for moral and sacred poetry, a process started by Tasso. In the appendix an alphabetic list of the texts with printing dates and information about their musical transpositions will be provided, together with a list of the odes classified according to their metric schemes.

Carlo Magno in Africa. Origini e fenomenologia dello tchiloli saotomense
Simone Celani

Carlo Magno in Africa. Origini e fenomenologia dello tchiloli saotomense
The article is dedicated to the tchiloli, a unique theatrical representation which is still performed in the African island of São Tomé. It features Charlemagne and the nobles of his court. The core of the work is related to the killing of Valdovinos, son of the Marquis of Mantua, by D. Carloto, son of Charlemagne; this narrative theme has its roots in Old French literature and passes through several stages and evolutions through Italy and Spain; finally, in the sixteenth century, it is taken up in Baltasar Dias’ Tragédia do Marquês de Mántua, the basic text of the tchiloli. Following the different forms that the theme takes over time and analyzing the process of acclimatization in São Tomé, the tchiloli appears, with its history and the various interpretations that have been applied over time, as one of the most extreme and clear examples of permeability between “classical” and “popular” tradition.

The article explores the exegesis of some biblical passages relating to Margarita Porete and the so called “teología del descenso”. The model of the kénosis is complemented with other images of the descent of Christ which are needed by the soul in its itinerary. The article demonstrates how the peculiar reading of the Bible by Maguerite Porete perfectly corresponds with the practice of mysticism in the XIIIth c.

Minima postilla sul canzoniere marciano it. IX. 529 (10629)

Minima postilla sul canzoniere marciano it. IX. 529 (10629)
The article discusses the abbreviation for the name of Cino da Pistoia used in the italian canzoniere marciano, at the beginning of the section devoted to that poet. Many have intended the lack of the full name as a clue of the missing of an opening portion in the canzoniere, which may not be the case, if we compare it with an identical use registered in Vat. lat. 3793, written in the same years.

This article argues the need to return to the study of the main manuscripts of the “heretical” book written by Marguerite Porete (Le Mirouer des simples ames) and study its codicological aspects which neither the editions, nor the modern translations, have taken into account. The study of the so-called Chantilly manuscript and its marginal marks (manicules, nota bene and iconography) reveal that the material aspect of the book was intended as a guide for the interpretation of the. Such material aspects provide us with information about the text transmission and its reception.

Did the author of the Fiore know as well as the Roman de la Rose also other works by Jean de Meun? In its satiric parts against the mendicant orders, the Testament offers little updates concerning events following the years of composition of Jean de Meun’s main work. These updates can be found – probably not by chance − in some passages of the Fiore.
