Nani gladiatori e donne gladiatrici in età imperiale
Romeo Melloni

Nani gladiatori e donne gladiatrici in età imperiale

Dwarf and women gladiators in the imperial period

Though gladiatorial combat has entered the collective imagination as an emblem of arena entertainment, contests between dwarf and women gladiators have been researched by very few historians. The article sets out to explore the encounters between these marginal gladiatorial categories, which were confined to the reigns of Titus and Domitian. The analysis begins with evidence offered by literary sources: a venatio with low-class women; a female munus; an exhibition of dwarves in hand-to-hand combat and a geranomachia; and a munus between women and dwarves. These episodes are then compared with archaeological and epigraphic evidence to establish the context of such public exhibitions during the Flavian period. Some of the entertainments in question were of a cruel nature while in others the effect was tragi-comic or vulgar.

Martiri come gladiatori. Performance atletica e spirito agonistico nell’antichità cristiana
Leonardo Sernagiotto

Martiri come gladiatori. Performance atletica e spirito agonistico nell’antichità cristiana

Martyrs as gladiators. Athletic performance and combative resolve in Christianity during Antiquity

The article sets out to examine the complex relationship between Christianity and the world of ludi and munera in Antiquity and Late Antiquity. The interpretative approach focuses on the factors of agonism and competition which, as well as characterizing the athletes and fighters of the arena also exerted a lasting influence on the interpretation of Christianity in Antiquity, supported by evidence from the artistic production of the time that was focused on the depiction of athletic frames and sporting postures. What emerges is a situation in which the ludic world was alternately antithetical and similar to its religious counterpart: for decades the expression athleta Dei developed and given prominence, though eventually its use dwindled in the face of the execution of martyrs in the arena and the circus and hermit monks struggling against demons and their own bodily impulses. It was only in Late Antiquity, when sporting events became less popular, that the Christian religion began to lose interest in individual performance and to concentrate instead on the choral actions of groups or communities.

Perceptions of earning in Cockayne-themed Italian and French literature between the 13th and 16th centuries

The essay is dedicated to the literary subject of the Land of Cockayne in the Italian and French textual traditions between the 13th and the 16th centuries. The paper is divided into two sections. The first section presents the different representations of money, whose variations in the texts are related to the diastratic, diatopic and diachronic reception of the subject. The second section looks at the activities which are banned from the Land of Idleness and how these are variously perceived in reference to them. Here the internal contradictions of the textual tradition are taken into account. This tradition includes on one hand texts which prohibit working activities, and on the other texts which allow them but ban other activities such as war or trade. Perceptions of money, how it is earned and of economic activity in general, all of which depend on factors of a social nature, are reflected in the representations of Cockayne and of its idleness.

A world of play. Pierre Duval and printed games on a marketplace for maps in 17th-century Paris

A world of play. Pierre Duval and printed games on a marketplace for maps in 17th-century Paris

A distinct genre of printed geographical games emerged in mid-17th century Paris. These were made by professional geographers and sold in areas of the city specifically associated with the burgeoning map trade. Typically modelled on the game of the goose, or packs of playing-cards, the games were intended to assume a didactic role and to educate their players during their use. Focusing on the leading figure associated with the production of geographic games, Pierre Duval (1618-1683), this essay establishes the integral role printed games played in the fashioning of Duval’s public identity as géographe-précepteur among a wider output of maps, treatises, charts and tables. Duval’s games were carefully thought-out cartographic tools and they responded to a broad public demand for instructional materials in geography. This essay examines the appeal of maps and games and the particular correlations between them, both as products of the geographer and in the hands of contemporary sellers and users.

Towards a cultural history of performance, politics and play

The themed section included in this issue of Ludica represents a selection of papers presented at the annual conference of the International Society for Cultural History, held in New York in September 2018. The theme of ‘Performance, Politics and Play’ was chosen in response to the ‘performative turn’ in the humanities. One of the highlights of the event was a round table held at New York University to initiate a methodological dialogue between theorists and practitioners of performance studies and of cultural history. The current selection of contributions aims to address the heuristic potential of such interaction between scholarly approaches. Case studies range chronologically from Antiquity to the present, vary significantly in their geography and examine diverse forms of social practice. A stimulating theoretical contribution by Christian Biet opens the section, offering readers a perspective on the history and social power of theatrical experience that highlights the interactive role played by the audience and the political potential of performance.

Session, representation and performance. Perspectives at play in the theatre (17th-21st century)
Christian Biet

Session, representation and performance. Perspectives at play in the theatre (17th-21st century)

This paper sets out to study the history of theatre, especially during early modern times, in order to develop a theory of theatre as a social and aesthetical ‘phenomenon’ where an assembly, during the theatrical session, performs a representation of the city. More than any other art, the theatre is in practice a delicate and cognitive process of general oscillation, where both the watchers and the watched come, each in turn, or together, to discover within the session what their positions, thoughts and propositions signify. It is therefore by playing, by hesitating and oscillating between two positions, that the participants expend their energy, find pleasure, make contradictory judgments, think and consequently verify that one can find enjoyment in playing, in playing by judging and by judging. And by being capable of this kind of pseudo-citizenship in the context of play, of pleasure and of reflection, they act, think, and judge in this lieu of the theatre as if they were doing so outside. After Foucault, we could thus infer that the heterotopia which is the theatre contests all other spaces precisely because it is capable of creating illusions that denounce outside spaces, real spaces, as illusions, because the theatre is an accepted aesthetic and social reality and illusion.

Political performances in pre-Roman Italy. Armed dance in Etruscan funerary iconography (6th-4th centuries bc)

For Etruscan communities, armed dance served both as an expression of their authority and independence and also as a way of ranking individuals. Basing itself only on iconographic source material, this study proposes new approaches to the question of political performance in pre-Roman Italy, focusing on forms of dance and performance involving the use of weapons. Four distinct types are explored: armed processions, sporting dance, Pyrrhic dance and dramatized combat. While sporting and Pyrrhic dance both had an educational function, armed processions and dramatized combat involved a real martial dimension. In-depth examination of Etruscan iconography reveals the temporality of two types of performance – Pyrrhic dance and dramatized combat – and also sheds light on the temporality of Etruscan ritual, primarily funerary, practices.

Games as an extension of politics: the curial strategies of Ippolito d’Este

It is revealing to study the role of play in a specific social background. Ippolito d’Este lived for several years – between 1536 and 1563 – at the French court and became familiar with Francis I, Henry II and Catherine de’ Medici. To acquire a leading role with the French sovereigns, he used all his powers of persuasion and all the resources at his disposal. Besides being a prominent patron of artists, he was a playfellow of Francis I and Henry II. It is argued here that play is not a distraction but a vital part of the curial life. It is a thoroughly social phenomenon as it encompasses every aspect of life. In the case of Ippolito d’Este, it was not only a leisure activity but a strategy to assert and maintain himself both politically and economically within the French court.

The Republic onstage. Political ceremonies and rituals in Venice’s mainland domains

Throughout the period when Venice ruled its hinterland territories known as the ‘Domini di Terraferma’, their governors were not only figures of administration and authority but also performed the fundamental function of representing the sovereign body of the Republic in possessions far from its centre. This article briefly describes the formal composition of two of the key public ceremonies in the urban ritual system in order to illustrate their symbolic meaning and effectiveness: the ceremonies to induct new governors and to celebrate the completion of their tours of duty in the 17th and 18th centuries. These ceremonies were performed regularly right up to the end of the Serenissima and served not only to manifest the presence of the central authority but also to reconfirm it locally. They were thus interactive occasions that imparted specific political and cultural identifying features to the relationship between the Dominante and the territories it ‘dominated’.

Performance, poetry, and politics. The 1608 marriage of Cosimo II de’ Medici and Maria Magdalena of Austria
Madison U. Sowell

Performance, poetry, and politics. The 1608 marriage of Cosimo II de’ Medici and Maria Magdalena of Austria

Ferdinando I de’ Medici groomed his son Cosimo II for dynastic greatness by arranging a marriage with Archduchess Maria Magdalena of Austria in 1608. In his Descrizione delle feste (1608) Camillo Rinuccini detailed the elaborate festivities held in conjunction with the marriage, including a veglia (evening entertainment), entitled Notte d’Amore, which was performed in the Pitti Palace. Michelangelo Buonarotti (the Younger) composed another court entertainment, Il giudizio di Paride, and Francesco Cini choreographed a flotilla of competing boats on the Arno. Several poets – including Carlo Boccherini, Severo Bonini, Anselmo Coletti da Barga, Lorenzo Colli, Raffaello Gualterotti, Virginio Moscardi, Lorenzo Parisi, Giovanni Battista Pinelli, Romano Romani, and Prospero Tatti – composed canzoni, panegyrics, orations, eclogues, dialogues, and other rime in Italian and Latin to celebrate the political union of the two families. This essay analyzes the encomiastic poems in an effort to understand the Medicis’ political strategy behind the arranged marriage vis-à-vis other European powers.

Performance, poesia e politica.

Holding the reins. Female horseback riding and aristocratic authority in 17th-century France

This article investigates the significance of female equestrianism within 17th-century French aristocratic culture, highlighting its role both as leisure practice and as a key tool for elite women to exercise their authority in the political and military arena. The study of contemporary riding manuals, examined in dialogue with paintings and engravings, as well as extant objects, sheds new light on equestrian techniques and technologies available for women at the time. Research into general practices and prescriptions is complemented by a close analysis of the experiences of three French noblewomen, whose equestrian feats were celebrated during their lifetime. The biographical accounts of Anne-Marie-Louise d’Orléans Duchess of Montpensier (1627-1693), Catherine Meurdrac de La Guette (1613-1676) and Alberte-Barbe d’Ernécourt, dame de Neuville et de Saint-Baslemont (1607-1660) offer precious insights that complicate current understandings of the physical education and corporeal life of elite women from the period.

Performing political propaganda. Sports in 1980s Communist Romania

This article situates sport and sporting performance in relation to Romanian Communist propaganda, with specific reference to several sporting events during the 1970s and 1980s. We aim to analyze the motives for using sport for political purposes and the means by which this was achieved. Communist Romania stands out not only for the success enjoyed in organizing and participating in international sporting events, but also because of the complex interaction between Ceausescu’s personality cult and the sporting events of that decade. Romania’s organization of the 1981 Summer Universiade and its participation in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics served as instruments of foreign policy through which the communist regime attempted to maintain the illusion of a country that was independent of the Soviet Union. In spite of the regime’s intentions to use sport for political ends, the performance of sport also came to embody different ideas and significations for the Romanian people.

State-supported feminism and Tunisian female artists since independence

This article sets out to explore the processes of construction/deconstruction in state-supported feminism through analysis of its manifestations associated with Tunisian artistic bodies, especially as regards the tension between these dominant types of discourse and the Tunisian artistic sphere of activity from independence to the revolutionary events. Female dancers, as a body with a distinct ethical, political and aesthetic position, query relationships and hierarchies between structures, individuals and standpoints. Instrumentalized and in the service of the state, or revolutionary and resistant, they connect with authorities and biopolitics through arrangements between the dominant state system and their individual capacity for action. The assumption underlying this study is a belief that control of bodies or groupings is not confined to restriction of rights. Nation states can also emancipate bodies in order to gain more control over individuals.
