Throwing Games, Contests, Football, Games of Chance described in the Registers of the Apostolic Penitentiary (circa 1440-1490)
Arnold Esch

The petitions submitted to the Apostolic Penitentiary in Rome contain frequent references to – and sometimes even detailed descriptions of – various games. In order to gain absolution, the petitioners, almost exclusively clerics, first had to explain precisely their responsibility regarding the death of another person (here, caused by accidents during play). The source thus provides plenty of unexpected information on children’s games, throwing games, ball games (even with an early description of a football game), wrestling, bullfighting, shooting, dice and card games and other games from all countries of Europe with many details on rules, arrangements, geographic distribution patterns and specific risks of late medieval ludic activities.

Ludic Marginalities. The Other as Player in Early Modern Visual Culture
Antonella Fenech Kroke

The conquest of the New World and voyages to the East during the Renaissance introduced European culture to the Other. The new imaginary of otherness was not only fuelled by the “discovery” of this Other, but also by his games. As a result, new formulae were developed to depict ludic marginality in images, setting the scene for the beginnings of ethnography and the process of assimilation of the Other. In his Trachtenbuch (1529), Christoph Weiditz presents a group of drawings of Amerindians playing games. While their nudity and variously painted costumes are the main signs of alterity, the formal and symbolic presentation of the bodies and social and ludic practices of peoples from across the seas reveal more than just curiosity for the Other. It also shows a way of perceiving, accepting and ultimately integrating the Other into European societies of the Ancien Régime.

Mantua during the Renaissance: hunting images and locations
Documentary sources confirm the Gonzaga’s assiduous practice of hunting. Among the many accounts, the hunts in 1530 stand out for the presence of the Emperor Charles V while on a visit to Mantua. However, images of hunting are far fewer than written accounts. The oldest hunting scenes – from the late Gothic period in Lombardy (second decade of the 15th century) – are to be found in a palazzo in what is today Via Marangoni that once belonged to a lesser member of the Gonzaga family. Lunettes in the “Sala della Scalcheria” in Mantua’s Ducal Palace have hunting scenes painted by Lorenzo Leonbruno for Isabella d’Este. The vault of the “Camera del Pesce” (in the “Appartamento della Rustica”) as well as the borders of the Gonzaga Storie di Mosè tapestries – now in Milan’s Duomo Museum – are decorated with a surprising array of wild game. The Gonzaga court was renowned for the practice of falconry, images of which decorate the “Camera dei Falconi” in the Ducal Palace (Lorenzo Costa the Younger, 1576-1592). Hunting scenes are also to be found in Palazzo Te in two tondi in the “Sala dei Venti” (in the zodiac sign of Cancer and Libra, painted before 1530). As befitted their rank, the Gonzaga owned several hunting lodges in which to rest after hunting. One of the best preserved from an architectural point of view is the “Bosco della Fontana” hunting lodge at Marmirolo, designed by Giuseppe Dattaro (1592) and completed shortly afterwards by Anton Maria Viani.

Roman cafés: history and culture. From Rome’s cafés under the Ancien Régime to the café chantant – conversation, games, music, songs, dances, comics and sciantose (end of the 17th century-Belle Époque)
The essay describes Rome’s 18th-century cafés by means of the official business registers (fondo Camerale II, Arti e mestieri) in Rome’s State Archive. The material examined spans the years 1776 to 1794, and provides hitherto unpublished information on Rome’s cafés. Managed by the guild of the caffettieri, coffee shops were concentrated in the city’s most populous neighbourhoods: Ponte, Parione, Regola and Monti. Given Rome’s particular political and cultural situation, the city’s Ancien Régime cafés resembled traditional taverns or inns and were nothing like the cafés of Milan and Naples that were hubs for an Italy engaging with the Enlightenment and reforms. Although focused on the cafés’ ludic elements, the essay also enquires into the type of premises, the patrons of the cafés and what kind of drink and pastries were available (from the end of the 18th century, the fare became increasingly varied with coffee, tea, chocolate, pastries and biscuits on offer). Following on from the 19th century, the Belle Époque in Rome was marked by its cafés chantants. Scant mention is made, however, of this new form of entertainment, as this is another story yet to be researched and written.

Venice 1848: Risorgimento fervour and lotteries. A patriotic undertaking
Gherardo Ortalli

Publicly sponsored lotteries, even for political and military ends, are a very old practice. In Italy, probably the earliest lottery was organised in Milan in 1448 as an attempt to bolster the treasury of the troubled young Ambrosian Republic established in 1447. A similar venture was tried in the Republic of Venice where, following the temporary end of Habsburg domination in 1848, Vincenzo Tergolina, a local aristocrat, strove to finance a lottery in aid of the Republic backed by his own personal fortune. The patriottica impresa did not obtain government approval, however, at which Tergolina tried to float his project in Florence, organizing a lottery for the benefit of the Venice government in the Tuscan city. But just as the plan was about get underway, the Tuscan Republic came to an end with the return in 1849 of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Leopold II of Habsburg. The affair is nonetheless interesting for the way Italian Risorgimento passions became entangled with the history of lotteries.

Venezia 1848: spiriti risorgimentali e lotterie.

“A taste for sport” in the 1865 Italian Civil Code
The paper aims to demonstrate how, despite the only passing reference made by Italy’s first Civil Code, legal doctrine at the end of the 19th century found a way of guaranteeing full legal protection to sports. Using arguments ranging from the extremely pertinent to the highly inconsistent, legal experts proposed a broad interpretation of article 1803 governing contracts of gaming and gambling. Referring to contests dating back to Ancient Rome, competitions held during the recent Olympic Games, billiards, chess, mountain climbing, fencing, target shooting, soccer, rugby and cycling, the treaties written by jurists of the time bear witness to the vitality and wide range of sports practised in the years straddling the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Role of Play in a Prince’s Education according to Giles of Rome and his Translator Guillaume (13th-14th centuries)
Giles of Rome (1243-1316) wrote his De regimine principum for Philip the Handsome around 1279. He drew on recently re-discovered texts by Aristotle to revive the question of education and especially play and games. He writes of play as a pleasurable physical and mental exercise. However, he considers the sort of play characteristic of the young child as unreasonable, advising it be limited to avoid all excesses. Nonetheless, play is seen as a useful tool not only for the sound development of the child but also as an effective means of preparing a young person to become a member of adult society. In 1330, Giles of Rome’s translator, Guillaume, adapted and ‘re-interpreted’ Giles’ comments on play in the light of his own experience and knowledge moulded by the Jewish tradition.

Language Immersion through Movement Games and Play in Late Medieval Europe
Sophie Caflisch

To date, medievalists have never related the modern concept of immersive language learning to medieval multilingualism. In this paper the link between movement games, outdoor play and immersive learning in late medieval Europe is investigated by means of three sources. Statutes from the University of Angers advise teachers to oblige their students to keep movement games a Latin-only activity. Thirty years later, Juan Luis Vives gives a technical view of immersive language learning during games, explaining how teachers can take advantage of these activities to enhance their students’ speaking abilities. Similar approaches were also adopted in the courtly environment. In the Weisskunig, Maximilian I’s father is said to have gathered boys from all over Europe to oblige his son to learn their mother tongues. These examples suggest that medieval educators were of the opinion that students’ enthusiasm for play enhanced the language learning experience.

Playing in the city of the Humanists. Youth confraternities in Florence in the 15th century
A centre of humanism, Florence from the beginning of the 15th century saw the birth of a series of ad hoc youth confraternities with far-reaching pedagogic aims. Embracing both lay and Church members, these societates puerorum, adulescentium et iuvenum focused especially on enactments of mystery or miracle plays, considered the practice best suited to humanist values and teaching models, and reflecting the moral expectations of the religious reformers of the day. “Piacevoli exercitii”, the plays had a dual civil and moral aim: to educate young people in gesture and words and expose them to the religious art of Florence. This all-embracing educational experience, which begins with the eyes to then engage all the other senses and reach a vision of the soul, taught its young members, but also all Florentines, how to read holy images and recognize the virtues embodied in the biblical characters portrayed in the mystery plays they enacted.

Spielen in der Stadt der Humanisten. Die Florentiner Jugendbruderschaften im 15. Jahrhundert

“Sharpening the minds of the youth”. Games, mathematics and symbolic violence during the 15th century
The Quattrocento is an excellent observatory from which to study the social and intellectual approach to what was taught the young generation – and how it was taught – during these times of far-reaching political and social change. The question of shaping young minds was considered a real social emergency. Preachers, reformers and humanists were all concerned with the manner in which youth should engage in social activities, taking pains to define appropriate modalities, timeframes and spaces. In this context, an important role was played by mathematical games. Considered intellectual exercises and instrumental to acceptable social conduct, these activities have been largely unexplored by historical research. The article aims to provide insights into ludic culture during the Quattrocento as revealed by the mathematics textbooks widely used throughout the Italian peninsula between the 14th and 15th centuries.

„Zur Schärfung des Geistes der Jugend“. Mathematische Spiele und symbolische Gewalt im 15. Jahrhundert
