Jouer au Haut Moyen Âge. Quelques réflexions autour du colloque du CISAM
Francesca Aceto
Play and games during the Middle Ages. Thoughts on the cisam seminar (Spoleto, 20th-26th April 2017)
The recent 2017 cisam seminar in Spoleto on play and games during the early Middle Ages was of enormous academic interest. An introductory keynote address by Gherardo Ortalli was followed over the days by presentations from some thirty-four speakers from many different disciplines, university institutes, and countries, including France, Germany, Spain and the United States. The meeting was an exceptional opportunity to take stock of the state of the art of research, topical issues, methods, tools and techniques employed in the field. Although not a detailed account of all the questions
dealt with, the article gives an overview of some key history and historiography talking points
during the meeting, and indicates some of the new elements for reflection and discussion that emerged.
Spielen im Frühmittelalter. Nachlese zum cisam-Kolloquium (Spoleto, 20.-26. April 2017)
(in Frankreich, Deutschland, Spanien, usa u.a.) zu hören.
Beyond Siena: the Palio Culture of Renaissance Italy
Christian Jaser
Urban horse racing in Renaissance Italy is a strikingly understudied phenonemon. Past research has excessively concentrated on the history of the Sienese palio, one of the key Renaissance festivals of contemporary Italy. In contrast to this approach, the palio culture of the Renaissance is a rich and decidedly polycentral historical subject spreading over many towns and cities of northern and central Italy. This paper argues for a broadening and refocusing of palio research beyond Siena in order to gain insight into the historical significance of these urban contests for the Italian Renaissance as whole. The paper is divided into two sections, both dedicated to key aspects of Italian palio culture. The first section explores the spatial arrangements of urban racetracks and corresponding street maintenance regulations that are directly linked to the overall disciplinary dimension of late medieval communal urbanism. The second section deals with the symbolic profits for racing patrons by participating and winning in competition.
Prohibition and gambling.
A look at Castilian divination books from the 16th-17th centuries
The article provides an in-depth review of divination books
from three points of view.
First, how the books’ structure
is determined by the approach
to and underlying purpose of divination: foretelling the future. Secondly, how the divination procedure is devised so that the inquirer passes from question to answer, and thirdly, how and in what settings these books were used. The author has based his research on five extant examples of so-called ‘direct’ divination books, written in Spanish between the 16th and 17th centuries.
Scocola, the matchless jester of Borso d’Este at the Ferrara court
The article looks at the life
and ‘jests’ of a celebrated court jester named Scocola, living at
the Ferrara court during the
15th century. Physically small but robust, Scocola was a Jew who
had converted to Christianity.
He was greatly appreciated by Duke Borso d’Este with whom
he was on such excellent terms
as to be able to pester his master constantly for money, and be rewarded by the latter’s generosity. It is the author’s opinion that the jester suffered from a severe case of gambling addiction, a condition he very probably shared with his master, the Duke. Besides this trait, Scocola was undoubtedly blessed with an irresistible sense of humour, even if no examples
of his jests have come down to us. We know, however, that his sharp wit was appreciated wherever
he went. Even the Emperor Frederick III Habsburg is reported to have been amused by the Ferrara court fool.
A proposed iconography of the Gioco dell’Oca board game
The paper investigates the more sophisticated meanings behind the images appearing on Game of Goose (Gioco dell’Oca) boards, examining their iconographic and symbolic analogies with images from the
Tabula Cebetis, a Greek work rediscovered in Italy in the
second half of the 15th century. The author returns to the debate around the origins of the board game, showing how its structural and numerical symbolism is closely connected to the sort of refined societies as existed in Florence at the time. Numerous indications show that the game was in vogue at the court of Francis I de’ Medici whose family was known for
its interest in Neo-platonic philosophical ideas. As befits a game whose outcome depends
on chance, the images on the boards show the human lifespan
as a linear journey broken by a series rewards and tribulations. This initiatory characteristic invites comparison with the above-mentioned Greek work, which describes the progress of
the virtuous man called upon to choose between good and evil as he treads the path towards Wisdom.
A Remedy for the Weary Mind. Intellectuals and Play in the Middle Ages
Andreas Hermann Fischer
Although the major importance of Aristotelian play theory in the Middle Ages has been recognized by scholars of play, many details of its entangled history have not been sufficiently analysed. In this paper, I argue that one hitherto neglected aspect is the role this theory played for the self-perception of medieval intellectuals like Albertus Magnus, Thomas Aquinas and Jean Buridan. They conceived of play as a technique to restore consumed mental forces after excessive concentration on theoretical contemplation. Thereby, they established a distinctive intellectual use of play, following the precepts of Aristotle and his virtue of play which he had called eutrapelia. By doing so, they contributed significantly to the creation of an intellectual ludicity.
nelle contemplazioni teoriche.
Jean Barbier and Thomas Middleton Rewrite the Rules of Chess
Mark Kaethler
Despite being a topic of substantial scholarly conversation, Thomas Middleton’s A Game at Chess (1624) is rarely considered as chess. When critics have applied Arthur Saul’s early chess manual to the play, they do so only to dismiss the significance of the play as a game by identifying the incongruities between Middleton’s and Saul’s respective works. This study reveals that by attending to Jean Barbier’s emendations of Saul’s manual four years after its initial publication and by treating it as an influential text rather than a catalogue of selected chess moves, Middleton’s play can be approached as a game that reveals the ways in which earlier notions of chess were far more fluid than modern habits of gameplay. As a result, scholars can no longer dismiss Middleton’s understanding or treatment of the game as elementary, erroneous, or metaphorical; they must also engage with A Game at Chess as chess.
Obwohl Thomas Middletons

Educate through play/re-educate to play: preachers and men of the Church between the Middle Ages and the modern era
Between the 12th and 16th centuries, play was recognised
as one of the attributes of contemporary man. This was
also thanks to the ‘spirit of compromise’ shown towards
play by the Church, in particular preachers and moralists, who condoned play as principle
of Aristotelian-Thomist
doctrine. This quickly led to
the development of a complex regulatory framework disciplining play that on the one hand, condemned and sought to abolish practices considered contrary to
a Christian life, but on the other,
promoted games now considered necessary for a man of faith.
The extensive period taken into consideration allows identification of an educational ludus designed to reinforce the societas christiana, and evidence how, rather than a group of disparate practices, there existed a modus ludendi designed
to teach Christian attitudes and virtues, such as moderation, temperance, modesty, control of violent passions and so on.
Were preachers aware of educational games? Research into the collections of exempla (13th-15th century)
During the Middle Ages, preachers used exempla to make their sermons more accessible to the illitterati. In the dialectic between edification and amusement, these anecdotes come close to becoming games. Taking into account the many meanings of the terms ludere and ludus, the authors examine the chapter on play and games in Jean Gobi’s Scala coeli in which the preacher’s wrath is especially directed at gambling
200
for money. Play and games could also, however, be the basis for didactic and allegorical discourse. The authors investigated
the ludic implications of the so-called “classifying” images, examining the example of
the barbo as cited by Étienne
de Bourbon. A figure meant
to cast fear into the hearts
of children for educational purposes, stories of the barbo might be enhanced by the use of a bearded mask, a puppet or by the teller hiding his face only to uncover it suddenly once more. The medieval pastoral sermon was a vehicle for ludic amusement and instructive fear.
Kannten Prediger Erziehungsspiele? Untersuchung von Exempla- Sammlungen (13. bis 15. Jahrhundert)
Curiosity, teaching and pleasure in
the encyclopaedias of the Late Middle Ages: the Responsorium curiosorum attributed to Conrad of Halberstadt
Starting from a specific work
– the anonymous Responsorium curiosorum printed in Lübeck in 1476 and attributed to Conrad of Halberstadt – the paper considers the notion of ‘ludic didaxis’, or ‘enjoyable learning’ as illustrated by encyclopaedic compilations, a literary genre using a question and answer format. Particular focus
is given to compiler strategies concerning the selection of subjects, the organization and sequencing of the quaestiones, the attitude to the sources, and how all these aspects were geared to encouraging learning through play. Of note, and evidenced by the author, is the scientific nature
of the knowledge imparted
as opposed to moralizing anecdotal teachings. In fact, both information content and teaching method indicate compiler knowledge of the sources and familiarity with the specialist, academic subjects of concern
to high culture.
Demandes d’amour collections as teaching manuals
In courtly societies, poetry competitions and literary
games were frequent leisure activities. More than mere entertainment, however, they had a deeper social significance. The author investigates the form and content of these courtly dialogue games to show how
the demandes d’amour were a vehicle for a wealth of unspoken messages and double meanings
on multifarious aspects of love. The capacity to convey implied meaning made these literary games a means of sidestepping conventions, and the framework within which the demandes d’amour were enacted allowed not only erotic sous-entendus but also veiled references to political and other no-go topics, which although never openly expressed were understood by all.
Aspects of play-writing in France during the 15th century: sound thread, mime, polytope and mass media
The 15th century saw the appearance in France of extremely long drama texts of several thousand verses, which since the 19th century have been known as ‘mystery plays’. The article aims to describe some of the basic features of their writing by examining
the indications regarding the polytopic organization and ‘sound thread’ of the third day of the Passion by Arnoul Gréban.
The instructions together with the staging directions of the poses as indicated by different manuscripts show that movements in space (polytope) made during the action were intended to create a counterpoint of gesture and sound to accompany the narrative progression. The sound thread
– the music and sound effects – accompanying the spoken text focuses audience attention and makes the drama a unified
whole, with the performative elements and mime following
the narrative account.
