Repubblica e umanesimo in Italia nel XV secolo. Una introduzione
E. Igor Mineo

Republic and Humanism in 15th Century Italy. An Introduction

The article introduces the three essays that make up the monographic section of this issue, Republic and Humanism in Italy in the Fifteenth Century. They examine, in an innovative way, the problem of the relationship between humanism and political cultures in three different contexts: the towns of the Veneto, the communities of Friuli (all under Venetian rule: the former studied by Clémence Revest, the latter by Lorenzo Freschi), the Kingdom of Naples and, in particular, its great capital (Monica Santangelo). Despite the obvious peculiarities of each of these realities, these contributions share an attempt to rethink the Italian political space and the categories with which it has long been represented.

Ciceronianismo e ideale repubblicano nell’età dell’espansione veneziana in Terraferma
Clémence Revest

Ciceronianism and the Republican Ideal in the Age of Venetian Expansion

The article highlights the convergence between the invention of humanist rhetoric and Venetian continental expansion, through the study of the eulogies addressed to the rectors in the Terraferma in the first half of the 15th Century. The imitation of classical models, in particular of Cicero’s first letter to his brother Quintus, served to promote a representation of the Venetian rule as «republican», i.e. held by virtuous patricians. Such a discourse directly participated not only to the legitimation of Venetian imperialism, but also to the definition of a political contract with the elites of the conquered territories, guaranteeing a moral and cultural framework to the exercise of power.

//Res publicae// di una Repubblica. Discorsi e scritture nelle comunità friulane del Quattrocento
Lorenzo Freschi

Res publicae of a Republic. Discourses and Writings in the Friulian Communities of the 15th Century

Some recent studies have questioned the republicanism elaborated by Hans Baron and the Cambridge School. Following this approach, the article adopts a peripheral perspective, taking into consideration what is produced far from Florence, in areas where the influence of the great towns appears limited. The research investigates the plurality of forms of republican-humanist political discourse in some Friuli’s communities in the 15th Century. Specifically, the article analyses the relationship between humanistic ideological production and institutional dimension. Thanks to the humanist context, communities and ruling elites redefine, in dialogue with venetian power, a new aristocratic ideology.

Repubblicanesimo in un regno rinascimentale: culture e pratiche politiche a Napoli fra XV e XVI secolo
Monica Santangelo

Republicanism in a Renaissance Kingdom: Cultures and Political Practices in Naples Between the 15th and 16th Centuries

This article aims to explore the cultures related with the idealisation of the Roman republic and the practices of urban elites inspired by them in the capital of the kingdom of Naples between the 15th and early 16th Century. Through different textual sources and communication levels – from Pontano to the proposal of republica for Naples in de Jennaro’s commentary on Livy before Machiavelli’s Discorsi – the paper observes the ways in reusing ancient models in relation to the social distinction processes that transform institutions and practices of the political participation and exclusion, by arguing for the possibility, in specific crises, of a republican point of view maintaining obedience to the Crown.

Construire ou analyser des données en économie: une division du travail en trompe-l’œil
Agnès Gramain

Building or Analyzing Data in Economics: A Deceptive Division of Labor

Economics is often considered a discipline marked by a strong division of labor between those who produce databases and the researchers who exploit databases without necessarily paying attention to the «sources». The debate between economists and historians concerns this division of labor and its relationship to data in economics. To explore this debate, Gramain draws on several examples: an analysis of discriminatory behavior in experimental economics, the use of National Accounts data in the immediate post-war period, the construction of French domestic trade statistics, the processing of data on household confidence in the United States, and an analysis of broader judicial practices.

Odio, pace e giustizia in età moderna Bellabarba legge Broggio
Marco Bellabarba

Hate, Peace, and Justice in the Ancient Regime

This monograph examines one of the most defining characteristics of ancient regime justice: private peacemaking, or paci. For some time, this practice was considered a remnant of the medieval world that had been set aside or reserved only for unimportant legal cases in the early modern period. However, Bellabarba shows that the paci were not only a common remedy in the most significant early modern criminal cases, but that they were fully accepted by both secular and ecclesiastical judicial authorities.

Spazi mercantili e cosmopolitismo marittimo Talini legge Denis-Delacour
Giulio Talini

Mercantile Spaces and Maritime Cosmopolitanism

This volume explores commercial practices and sea traffic in eighteenth-century Rome, problematizing the notion of maritime cosmopolitanism in the Mediterranean. To this end, Talini discusses the intertwined problems of early modern littoral societies, mercantilism in the Papal States, and seafarers’ identity.

La triade del 1789 e il mondo contemporaneo Meriggi legge Romanelli
Marco Meriggi

The Triad of 1789 and the Contemporary World

While primarily historical in scope, this monograph is also informed by political philosophy and legal scholarship to reinterpret European and world history over the last two centuries by examining the variable fortune of the three key principles of the French Revolution: liberty, equality, fraternity. Meriggi engages with Romanelli’s arguments and proposes some insights on the puzzling questions that concern the practical translation of the «triad of 1789», starting from when it was first conceived.

La first lady e il liberalismo al femminile Fasce legge Baritono
Ferdinando Fasce

The First Lady and Female Liberalism

The book offers a political biography of Eleanor Roosevelt before, during, and after her experience as First Lady. After an initial section on the first three decades of her life, the discussion focuses on the period from the 1920s to the 1960s. Drawing on enormous archival work and in close dialogue with the vast literature on the First Lady, Fasce traces Roosevelt’s political activism, the thinking that sustained it, and the renewal of her role and liberalism that followed. Fasce chases the roots of Roosevelt’s activism in the universe of Anglo-American women reformers at the turn of the Century and developments up to the Cold War, considering domestic and international challenges of class, race, and gender.
