Abstract

A Historian of Germany Looks at the Italian City-State
A Historian of Germany Looks at the Italian City-State examines the city-states of central and northern Italy from a transalpine perspective. By asking questions which occur naturally to historians of Germany and Switzerland, it raises methodological issues and investigates four specific aspects: the hinterland as a resource; urban landholding; citizenship in the contado; jurisdictional exclusivity. The comparison reveals both similarities and differences, which offer an agenda for further research.
