Questo saggio discute la realtà piuttosto che l’idea di Roma nella Commedia, analizzando le quattro allusioni alla città e le loro implicazioni. This essay addresses the reality rather than the idea of Rome in the Commedia, looking at the poem’s four allusions to the city and their implications. It explores Dante’s acute if withering vision of Boniface’s Rome and its relationship to the historical record. Taking note of the Jubilee of 1300 as the highpoint of Boniface’s papacy, it argues that Dante attempted to create a personal version of this public pilgrimage event.
