Abstract

Moving from recent studies on preaching and performance, the paper focuses on the interaction between preaching and theatre suggesting a methodology to discover embedded theatrical elements in sermons. The author takes into account two different kinds of sources: artes praedicandi and sermons. Even if they all deal with the art of preaching, artes praedicandi present a great variety as their authors were driven by different purposes; while some treatises speak about the preacher’s skills, others focus on the sermon identifying its structural components. In the second part of the paper, the author compares the results derived from the analysis of the artes praedicandi with the information which could be extracted from sermons. In selecting the best case study, the choice has been directed towards Bernardino da Siena, Italian preacher of XV century, whose entertaining style of preaching was testified to even by his own contemporaries.
