«Romanische Forschungen».
Today, textual criticism does not hold a preponderant place in
«Romanische Forschungen», one of the oldest existing scientific
journals in the field of Romance studies. In order to understand this
situation, the paper gives a short overview on the history of textual
criticism in Romance studies in Germany. In the period of the
“Entre-deux-guerres”, textual criticism lost its scientific leadership
position which had made the pride of the humanities during the
former German Empire. From the 1920s onward, Romance studies
in Germany turned more and more to synchronically-oriented
linguistics and to literary studies. If textual criticism maintained
a certain position after World War II, this was due to important
and long-running projects in historical lexicography and to the
theoretically-oriented renewal of medieval studies. In the 1990s, the
fructuous debate on the “New Philology” has led to a revalorisation
of textual criticism in German Romance studies, supported by the
actual “editorial politics” of «Romanische Forschungen».
