Abstract

The composition of the oldest text of the Passiones of Saint Agata of Catania (in Latin) and of Saint Lucia of Siracusa (in Greek) is placed in the context of the bilingual facies of late antique Sicily. Basing on the most recent epigraphic and linguistic surveys, the author highlits the widespread character of Sicilian bilingualism, even within individual cities such as Catania and Syracuse between the end of the 5th and the beginning of the 6th century. Moreover, she presumes that the two Passiones could have been produced by a hagiographic bilingual atelier connected with the diocese of Catania.
