Abstract

Aspects of play-writing in France during the 15th century: sound thread, mime, polytope and mass media
The 15th century saw the appearance in France of extremely long drama texts of several thousand verses, which since the 19th century have been known as ‘mystery plays’. The article aims to describe some of the basic features of their writing by examining the indications regarding the polytopic organization and ‘sound thread’ of the third day of the Passion by Arnoul Gréban. The instructions together with the staging directions of the poses as indicated by different manuscripts show that movements in space (polytope) made during the action were intended to create a counterpoint of gesture and sound to accompany the narrative progression. The sound thread – the music and sound effects – accompanying the spoken text focuses audience attention and makes the drama a unified whole, with the performative elements and mime following the narrative account.
