Abstract

A world of play. Pierre Duval and printed games on a marketplace for maps in 17th-century Paris

A distinct genre of printed geographical games emerged in mid-17th century Paris. These were made by professional geographers and sold in areas of the city specifically associated with the burgeoning map trade. Typically modelled on the game of the goose, or packs of playing-cards, the games were intended to assume a didactic role and to educate their players during their use. Focusing on the leading figure associated with the production of geographic games, Pierre Duval (1618-1683), this essay establishes the integral role printed games played in the fashioning of Duval’s public identity as géographe-précepteur among a wider output of maps, treatises, charts and tables. Duval’s games were carefully thought-out cartographic tools and they responded to a broad public demand for instructional materials in geography. This essay examines the appeal of maps and games and the particular correlations between them, both as products of the geographer and in the hands of contemporary sellers and users.
