Abstract

State-supported feminism and Tunisian female artists since independence

This article sets out to explore the processes of construction/deconstruction in state-supported feminism through analysis of its manifestations associated with Tunisian artistic bodies, especially as regards the tension between these dominant types of discourse and the Tunisian artistic sphere of activity from independence to the revolutionary events. Female dancers, as a body with a distinct ethical, political and aesthetic position, query relationships and hierarchies between structures, individuals and standpoints. Instrumentalized and in the service of the state, or revolutionary and resistant, they connect with authorities and biopolitics through arrangements between the dominant state system and their individual capacity for action. The assumption underlying this study is a belief that control of bodies or groupings is not confined to restriction of rights. Nation states can also emancipate bodies in order to gain more control over individuals.
