resistenza all’entrelacement e una propensione verso costruzioni narrative
giustapposte e monadiche.
The Mort Artu has been extremely successful in Italy: apart from
quotations from it by Dante and Boccaccio, it was rewritten in a
considerable number of vernacular versions between the thirteenth
and the fifteenth centuries. In these texts, a certain tendency can be
perceived to isolate the Mort Artu from the Lancelot-Graal cycle,
although later it was often reintegrated (for instance in the Tristan
cycle) apparently under the influence of the Post-Vulgate. Another
characteristic of the Mort Artu circulating in Italy was its resistence to
entrelacement and a tendency towards the juxtaposition of monadic
narrative reconstructions. Variations can be noticed in the treatment of
important elements in the romance (for instance, the relationship
between Arthur and Mordred, the role of the love story between
Lancelot and Guinevere), probably due to the personal reactions of the
Italian compilers rather than to the version that they used.
