volgare.
This article proposes to illustrate the case of the Ghinassi codex,
copied in Bologna towards the end of the fourteenth century, as a
specimen in a vaster study of fourteenth-century manuscript collections
of Italian lyrics. In this manuscript, which is at present broken
up into three fragments (Estense Càmpori app. 1258, Estense Càmpori
app. 38, Vittorio Emanuele 563), it seems possible to identify a
curious thematic uniformity hidden beneath an irregular structure
which juxtaposes prose passages and poetic compositions and
alternates the use of the latin language with that of the vernacular. By
identifying the deep structure of the collection we can formulate
precise hypotheses concerning the criteria used in the selection of the
material which seems to follow a “local”, or “geographical” principle.
This enables us to reconstruct the existing link between poetic and
political issues, which seems to underlie the genesis of the miscellany.
