«Le queor est vn mult saluage beste …». I sensi in una traduzione
anglo-normanna dell’Ancrene Wisse (London, British Library,
Cotton Vitellius F. vii)
All’interno dell’esperienza linguistica e culturale anglo-normanna
Among the linguistic and cultural works of the Anglo-Norman
period, a translation into the French of England can be found of the
Ancrene Wisse, a text well-known to English scholars on account
of its central position in the panorama of Middle-English literature.
The analysis of the theme of the five senses, as it is treated in this
manual of spiritual exercise for anchoresses, evidences besides the
deeply-rooted connection between patristics and esegesis some
constituents of a complex cultural system. It seems indispensable,
now, for the study of the Anglo-Norman phenomenon, to carefully
research this system, which is based on the interaction of three languages
and literatures, Latin, English and French.
