The Original Sinse
Rimettere in connessione «soundsense
insomma senso sensibile, muscolare e auditivo.
The linguistic broadcasting in Finnegans Wake seems to be
aimed at redeeming the Original Sin of sense. According to Joyce,
the literature commits its «original sinse» against the sense by hook
or by crook: on the one hand, by recalling a sense that was given
formerly; on the other, by proceeding to suggest a sense through
the abstraction of sound. In Joyce’s «radiooscillating epiepistle»
the connection of «soundsense» and «sensesound» (the dual reference
to the voices and meanings on the radio, and to those of the
epistle, is not casual) requires a dual effort of interpretation on the
part of the reader, in order to forgive «the original sinse». First of
all, paradoxically, only the individual can make sense of the text;
(a word can mean one thing, and also another; it can have multiple
senses by interacting with more than one language). Secondly, in
order to reveal such a multiplicity of senses, it must actually be
said, that is to say, pronounced aloud, thus involving muscular articulation,
feeling and hearing.
