L’articolo cerca di stabilire una nuova etimologia per lo spagnolo terco “avaro”. L’analisi è basata su quattro argomenti principali: la base etimologica di terco è aggettiva e non verbale; questa base aggettiva non è di origine latina, ma appartiene al sostrato di origine indoeuropea presente nelle lingue romanze occidentali; terco oltre che un senso morale o psicologico presenta nel Medioevo un senso topografico; lo spagnolo terco, infine, è in rapporto stretto sia dal punto di vista etimologico che semantico con l’italiano terchio “rozzo, zotico, spilorcio, tirchio” e tirchio “avaro, spilorcio, taccagno”.
The article aims at establishing a new etymology for the Spanish term “terco”, that is, “miserly”. The analysis is based on four main arguments: the etymological basis of the term is adjectival and not verbal; it is not of Latin origin but derives from the substratum of Indoeuropean origin underlying all Western Romance languages; in the Middle Ages, the word “terco” had a topographical sense as well as a moral or psychological sense; finally the word “terco” in Spanish has a close relationship, from both the etymological and semantic point of view, with the Italian “terchio”, coarse, boorish, mean, tight-fisted, and “tirchio”, miserly, tightfisted, stingy.
