In a certain sense, the history of literature is the history of the
canons that organize our knowledge of literary texts. Of course
these canons are inspired and governed by the prevalent taste and
therefore the succession of canons corresponds to the changes and
developments of taste. Looking at things from a distance, it becomes
clear that memorable revolutions of taste have overthrown canons
that seemed to have been consolidated. A canon can be partially
accepted, and then transformed or abolished. A writer is accepted
in the canon for solid, if not cogent, reasons connected with the
contribution given by that writer, or by one or more of his works,
to the subsequent development of later literature. It is not merely a
question of intrinsic qualities: it is due to the fact that great writers
create innovation in the sensibility of readers, with consequent
changes in form and theme. The canon, therefore, delineates a
succession of authors and works that have created changes in the
practice of literature. But shall we be able to speak of a canon in the
future? A canon of authors and works implies that our idea of the
author and the literary work must be permanent, but it is doubtful
whether this can remain forever valid in the course of time.
