This article is concerned with the relationship between the
text and the image in late medieval cartography. The captions that
accompany the World Map made by Fra Mauro of Camaldoli in the
middle of the fifteenth century have been used as a pretext, on the
one hand, to study the physiognomy and the treatment of the sources
used by the cartographer (especially the Milione) and, on the other,
to define the cognitive and cultural relations that link the actual map
with the textual information.
